The first barracks for the
Malay Regiment was built in 1936. Overlooking the sea near the town
of Port Dickson, it included regimental buildings, offices, quarters
and mess halls.
With rapid expansion, the Regiment was short of officers and platoon
commanders. Four of the soldiers were promoted to platoon commanders.
Trained in Port Dickson, they also went through a 3-month attachment
with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Singapore.
After their promotion, the platoon commanders received a salary of
$125 a month. In the 1930s, this was a lot of money, comparable with
what a doctor or other young professionals earned in the Malayan Civil
Service. |
